How Interior Design Adds Value to Investment Properties in the Algarve

A beautiful holiday home is one thing. A beautiful holiday home that also performs as an investment? Even better.

The Algarve has long attracted international property investors, and with good reason. Beautiful beaches, an exceptional climate and a thriving tourism industry make it an attractive destination for holiday property ownership.

But in an increasingly competitive rental market, location alone is no longer enough.

Today's discerning guests expect more than a comfortable bed and a pleasant terrace. They are looking for beautiful interiors, thoughtful details and that wonderful feeling of arriving somewhere special.

And this is where good interior design can make a real difference.

From Ordinary Apartment to Beautiful Holiday Home

A few years ago, we were asked to transform a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in Vilamoura into a high-quality holiday rental.

The property had everything going for it in terms of location. Situated within a lovely condominium, it offered plenty of natural light and excellent potential.

The interiors, however, were another story.

Glossy grey floors, plain white walls and dated finishes gave the apartment very little personality or warmth.

Rather than embarking on a major renovation, we focused on what would make the biggest difference: creating a completely new atmosphere through carefully selected furnishings, beautiful textiles, lighting and decorative details.

We started with fresh paint throughout and then furnished the apartment entirely, transforming an uninspiring space into a warm, elegant and welcoming holiday home.

The Difference Is in the Details

When furnishing a holiday rental, we approach the project slightly differently from a private residence.

The design process is more streamlined, but our standards remain exactly the same.

Furniture needs to be beautiful, comfortable and durable. Fabrics must be practical without compromising on appearance. And every room should feel considered rather than simply furnished.

For us, a fully furnished property means much more than sofas, dining chairs and beds.

We think about everything.

Beautiful bedding, quality pillows, summer and winter duvets, comfortable mattresses and carefully selected bed linen all contribute to the guest experience.

The kitchen is equally important. We equip our properties with quality crockery, glassware, cutlery, cookware and all the essentials needed for a comfortable stay.

These are details guests might not consciously notice when booking a property, but they certainly appreciate them once they arrive.

And it is precisely these details that distinguish a thoughtfully designed holiday home from an ordinary rental apartment.

Beautiful Interiors Are Also Good Business

There is a commercial side to all of this, of course.

In today's holiday rental market, photographs play an enormous role in attracting guests.

A beautifully furnished property immediately stands out online. It creates an emotional connection before a guest has even arrived.

Thoughtful interior design can help a property attract attention, appeal to a more discerning clientele and support its positioning within the rental market.

Our Vilamoura apartment is a lovely example.

Three years later, it has remained fully booked.

Naturally, location, management and many other factors contribute to a successful rental property. But we firmly believe that the quality and atmosphere of the interiors play an important role in its appeal.

And there is another consideration that property investors sometimes overlook.

A beautifully designed and furnished apartment doesn't just have the potential to perform well as a holiday rental. It can also become a more attractive property when the time comes to sell.

Quality interiors, a cohesive design and a property presented at its very best can make a significant difference to how prospective buyers perceive its value.

An Investment Worth Making

We often meet property owners who are happy to invest considerable amounts in purchasing a beautiful property but hesitate when it comes to furnishing it.

Yet the interiors are what transform those square metres into a home that people genuinely want to spend time in.

And furnishing a property properly from the beginning can also avoid the constant expense and inconvenience of replacing poor-quality furniture.

At Sarah Nicollier Interiors, we believe that a holiday rental deserves the same attention to detail as any beautiful home.

The approach may be more efficient and the design decisions more commercially focused, but the result should never feel like a compromise.

After all, a holiday property can be a wonderful investment.

There is absolutely no reason why it shouldn't also be a beautiful home.

This was how the property looked before.
